What is racism? The dictionary definition of racism is “the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.” Now I think what people need to focus on now is ‘Hidden Racism” I have come to realize that the worst racism in our today society is overlooked because it’s always too small to be consider as racism. For example telling somebody they’re too pretty to be african, or asking one if they are mixed because of hair texture is very much racist just as saying that all black people are inferior. This is why it’s hidden because we are so use to thinking “oh is just a question” so we overlook these racist sayings. What make hidden racist bad is we as society tend not to see it as racism because it has been buried overtime, and became acceptable by us. When things are embedded it makes it a lot hard to focus on what effects it have. This has me the world around us is racist with or without even knowing it. For example there are advertisements, Cartoons, Tv shows and etc. that contains racism. We as audience enjoy these multimedia things. “I remember thinking young whiteman usually don’t carry bugler tools.”“if he was black then police would have been called” These quotes are from a film I watched, and they basically had a black male age 25 and a white male age 25. These two gentlemen were both committing a crime of stealing a bike. Now when the white man was trying to break the chain off to take the bike, no one said anything, people walked by him like everything was normal, some even stop and said did you lose your keys? He said no I just want the bike and no one called the police. After this they had the black man do the same exact thing, he started to cut the chain, and literally everyone that walked by stopped and said, is that your bike, he said no I just want it. The person called the police and he told him to stop taking the bike. This whole film show a very good example of hidden racism because of his color he was basically doing something wrong is what I concluded from this film. Another example of hidden racism is this soap ad. The ad had a white kid giving a black soap and with the caption saying “Why doesn’t your mama wash you with fairy soap”. Now when I am talking about racism, people often think of blacks and white, when the reality is every race have this problem. For example people would ask a puerto rican if they were mexican. Or saying that all asian are good at math, yeah we say this and think it’s funny but in reality this is no joke, in fact it is racist.
One thing that I found very disappointed about this whole hidden racism thing is the kids Tv show that has racism. Basically what that's doing is building the next generation to be racist, because when they see these things on ads they think it is okay for black people to be beaten, or pushed around, have black be the bad guy in movies, or asian and foreigner look funny and ect. young black boys are now thinks they are not here enough since most heros in movie and shows are black. All the superheroes were white until now. I think that this is a problem that is affected not only older folks but is also insert the wrong image in the minds of our young ones. Here is are some cartoons ads and tv shows that contain hidden racism and why they are racist. “ Aladdin ‘The 1992 film portrays Arabs as barbaric savages. Jafar - the film's token villain - is depicted with far more striking Arab features than Aladdin, the star and hero.” Dumbo “Jet black crows appear, one of whom is called 'Jim Crow'. There is also a scene featuring faceless black men who perform menial labour and sing about how they have never learned to read or write.” Peter Pan “Native Americans are portrayed in the characters of Tiger Lily and the Red Man, with only the male chief speaking in broken language. It is also not until they place a feather in their hair and start whooping that Wendy, along with Peter, John and Michael feel able to join in the dancing around the campfire.” Now the question becomes, who is racist in America? The answer is everyone in America is Racist, and everyone in America faces racism, but what make it malicious is the fact that it is hidden.
